Rules

I have noticed that Japanese people really like to follow rules. Sometimes, it almost seems to be excessive. For example, today while walking down the street, I found myself at a four way intersection. I had to wait for the light to change before crossing the road. When the light changed, I started to cross. However, it was very strange because no one else was crossing with me. Suddenly, I thought maybe I made a mistake! As it turned out, all of the other people waiting to cross at that time were Japanese except for me. I realized that although the traffic light changed they were all waiting for the red hand to change to a white walking symbol. So, just because no one had hit the pedestrian button to make the sign change, everyone was refusing, or afraid, to cross the street, despite the fact that it was entirely legal. I hope that no one was in a hurry! In any case, I made it across and now have an interesting story to tell about the Japanese way of thinking.

  1. Too funny. I live in an area with very small streets with traffic lights and no traffic. Everyone here always waits for the light when it would literally take three steps to cross the street.

  2. Thanks for the comment! When this happened to me, I thought it was so unique. Apparently, it is not so unusual. It has too be really tempting for you when the streets are so small and there is no traffic!
